In short. Open Acquisition > AI Assistants to view visits Matomo attributes to recognised AI assistant referrers.

Definition: As of October 2026, Matomo shows human visits attributed to recognised AI assistant referrers in Acquisition > AI Assistants. An AI assistant referrer is the source information accompanying a visit after someone follows a link from an assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude.

Key facts

  • Matomo's terminology guide identifies assistant referrals using referrer information and gives chatgpt.com as an example domain.
  • The acquisition report guide lists total visits, row evolution, goal conversions and segmented visit logs in the dedicated report.
  • The AI Assistants guide also groups reports about automated activity, including AI Agent Overview and AI Chatbots Overview.

Where is the referral report?

Matomo's acquisition report guide gives this dashboard path:

Acquisition > AI Assistants

The report contains visits attributed to AI assistants. Its row evolution tool shows changes over time, and its goal conversion tools report recorded outcomes for those visits.

The same guide places an AI Assistant channel row in Acquisition > Overview and Acquisition > All Channels. These views compare assistant traffic with other acquisition channels, including Search Engines and Social Networks.

How does Matomo classify the source?

An acquisition channel groups visits by their origin. Matomo's terminology guide says a visit from a recognised assistant domain can enter the AI Assistant acquisition channel when a person clicks a source link supplied by that assistant. Its examples of assistants include ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Attribution requires available referrer information.

Historical reporting has a separate qualification. The acquisition report guide says the AI Assistant channel applies to data collected after the Matomo Cloud update introducing it. Earlier visits retain their original channels, such as Referral or Direct. The dedicated AI Assistants report may show older data through internal filtering of known AI referrers, while detailed channel reports and row evolution charts remain unavailable for that historical data.

What does the separate AI Assistants menu contain?

The AI Assistants guide links to reports about automated access. Matomo's terminology guide defines AI agents as systems that perform tasks or retrieve information without continuous user input. AI Assistants > AI Agent Overview compares their visits with human visits.

AI chatbots retrieve content directly from servers. The AI Chatbots Overview guide explains that their requests require server-side tracking because they execute no JavaScript. AI Assistants > AI Chatbots Overview includes Requests and Acquired visits. Requests counts chatbot requests reaching the site; Acquired visits counts visits originating from people clicking a link in a chatbot response.

FAQ

Can I inspect an individual assistant referral visit?

Yes. Matomo's acquisition report guide directs you to Visitors > Visits Log, where an assistant-originated session has its referrer labelled. Visitors > Visitor Profile includes the referral source alongside the visitor's action timeline.

Can I use the assistant channel in other reports?

Yes. The same guide gives the segment condition Channel Type Is ai. You can apply that segment to compare behaviour, goal conversions and engagement for assistant-referred visits across standard Matomo reports.
