AI referral traffic

The Citead team, updated

In short. AI referral traffic measures identifiable visits from assistant links using source information and URL tracking parameters.

Definition: AI referral traffic consists of website visits attributed to links from AI assistants. Analytics identifies these visits through available referral information and tracking parameters attached to destination URLs.

Key facts

  • As of 17 October 2026, Google's default channel documentation includes an AI Assistant channel covering sources such as ChatGPT and Gemini; Google AI Overviews and AI Mode belong to Organic Search.
  • Google's Traffic acquisition report covers sessions from new and returning users and includes Session source / medium.
  • Google's campaign URL documentation explains that tracking parameters in clicked referral links pass their values to Analytics.
  • Google's direct traffic guidance defines (direct) / (none) as traffic without a clear referral source and identifies redirects as a possible cause of lost tracking parameters.

How are assistant visits identified?

A source identifies where traffic originates. A medium describes how it arrives. Tracking parameters, also called UTM parameters, are labels added to a destination URL. Google's manual tagging documentation maps utm_source to manual source dimensions and utm_medium to manual medium dimensions.

A channel groups traffic according to rules. Google's AI Assistant channel rule requires the medium ai-assistant. The documentation says Analytics sets that medium and the campaign (ai-assistant) when the referrer matches its list of AI assistants. This makes the channel useful for reviewing recognized assistant referrals together.

The broader term AI referral traffic describes the origin of visits. The report's channel value follows Google's classification rules. A measurement record therefore benefits from retaining the source and medium alongside the channel, so the underlying attribution remains visible.

Where does the traffic appear in GA4?

Google Analytics 4, or GA4, provides the Traffic acquisition report under Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Google's report instructions describe a search box above the table for finding a particular traffic source. Session source or Session source / medium provides a more detailed view than a channel total.

The same documentation distinguishes this report from User acquisition, which focuses on where new users originate. Sessions measures sessions beginning on the website or application. Key events counts occurrences of events marked as key events. These metrics support separate reporting of visits and measured outcomes for an assistant source.

For a tracking-parameter check, Google's campaign URL guidance places UTM information in Page location. It omits those parameters from Landing page + query string and Page path + query string. Their absence in those dimensions is therefore expected.

Where do attribution gaps arise?

A referrer is information about the page from which a request originates, carried in the HTTP Referer header. The W3C's Referrer Policy specification defines policies that control this information. Its documented header example suppresses referral information for requests originating from the protected page:

Referrer-Policy: no-referrer

UTM labels travel in the destination URL. Google's direct traffic guidance says redirects can strip them and URL shorteners can remove referral details. A practical check follows the link through its redirects and checks whether the tracking parameters remain at arrival, as Google recommends.

The unidentifiable assistant share cannot be calculated from a direct-traffic total alone. Google's examples also include typed addresses and links from offline documents in (direct) / (none), so assigning that whole category to assistants overstates the evidence.

FAQ

How can I check whether assistant visits lead to outcomes?

You can examine Key events alongside Sessions for the selected source in Google's Traffic acquisition report. Mark the relevant event as a key event so the report counts it.

Does the AI Assistant channel include Google AI Overviews?

Google's channel definitions place AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search. The AI Assistant channel excludes them.
