In short. Select the language first, enter the old path, and choose an internal slug or enter a complete external URL.
Definition: In Wix's multilingual URL Redirect Manager, a redirect is scoped to the language selected in the manager. You enter the old URL as a path such as
/about-us, then choose an internal destination by its page slug or enter the complete URL for an external page.
Key facts
- Wix says redirects for a multilingual site can run only between pages in the same language. Its example permits a Spanish page to redirect to another Spanish page, but not to a French page. Wix's multilingual redirect documentation
- The language is selected from the drop-down at the top of URL Redirect Manager before you create the redirect. The selected language scopes the redirect being entered. Wix's multilingual redirect documentation
- Wix's example old URL is the path
/about-us, entered under Old URL. Wix's multilingual redirect documentation - For a page on the same site, Wix instructs you to start typing the new page's URL slug and select it from the drop-down. For an external page, enter the entire destination URL. Wix's multilingual redirect documentation
- The new URL cannot contain Wix's language query parameter,
?lang=. Wix's multilingual redirect documentation
Which language does the redirect use?
Open SEO & GEO in the site's dashboard, go to Tools and settings, and open URL Redirect Manager. Wix's multilingual instructions then place the language drop-down before + New Redirect. Select the language whose old and new pages belong together before choosing Single redirect or Group redirect.
The language choice is a manager setting for the redirect entry. Wix states that redirects can be created only between pages in the same language. A Spanish source therefore needs a Spanish destination, while a Spanish to French mapping is outside the documented workflow.
What goes in Old URL and the new URL?
The Old URL field takes the old URL path. Wix gives this example:
/about-us
For a page on the Wix site, start typing the destination page's URL slug and select the matching page from the drop-down. The documentation describes the destination as a page slug, so the internal workflow is a page selection rather than a language query string pasted into the field.
For a page outside the site, enter the entire URL. A destination such as https://example.com/fr/page is a complete URL format, but the Wix article's operative instruction is to enter the full external URL. It separately states that the new URL cannot contain ?lang=.
Wix's general 301 redirect documentation defines the manager as the place to create a permanent redirect from an old page URL to a new URL. Its manual workflow also calls for the old path under Old URL, then distinguishes an internal page selected from the drop-down from an external page entered as the entire URL. How do imported multilingual paths work?
The same language selection applies to imports. In URL Redirect Manager, select the language, open More Actions, and choose Import [language] redirects. Wix says the import accepts a CSV file with up to 500 URL redirects at a time and that each site can have a maximum of 5,000 redirects.
The import screen can add new redirects or replace existing redirects. Wix also provides a CSV report with status columns when an import needs checking. The article does not publish a separate language-prefix syntax for the CSV paths; it documents the language selector and the language-specific import command.
FAQ
Should the language code be typed before the old path?
Wix's documented example uses /about-us in Old URL. The instructions select the language from the manager's drop-down first and do not tell you to prepend a language code to that path.
Can a Spanish redirect point to a French page?
No. Wix says multilingual redirects can run only between pages in the same language and gives Spanish to French as an unsupported example.
Can the destination contain ?lang=?
No. Wix specifically says the new URL cannot contain the language query parameter ?lang=.
How can a redirect be removed for one language?
Select the language in URL Redirect Manager, choose the redirect's delete control, and select Delete for [Language] Only. Wix also offers Delete for All Languages, and says deletion cannot be undone.
