How do I disable search indexing for a Webflow page?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Disable Sitemap indexing in the page’s SEO settings and publish the site, with the auto-generated sitemap enabled.

Definition: As of 17 October 2026, Webflow's documented page-level indexing control is Sitemap indexing in Page settings. Switching it off and publishing adds a noindex meta tag, an HTML instruction asking supporting search engines to exclude the page from search results, and removes the page from the sitemap.

Key facts

  • Webflow's indexing documentation requires an enabled auto-generated sitemap for the page-level toggle.
  • The same documentation requires publishing the site after changing the toggle.
  • Google's noindex guidance requires the page to remain accessible to its crawler, the software that fetches pages for search.

What needs to be enabled first?

A sitemap is a file listing site URLs for search engines. Webflow's sitemap documentation describes this prerequisite setup:

  1. Open Site settings > SEO > Sitemap.
  2. Set Auto-generate sitemap to Yes.
  3. Click Save changes.
  4. Publish the site.

Webflow updates its automatically generated sitemap.xml each time the site is published. The same documentation places a custom sitemap in a separate workflow, with Auto-generate sitemap set to No. The page-level toggle requires automatic generation.

How is indexing disabled for the page?

Webflow's page-indexing instructions give this sequence:

  1. Open the page concerned.
  2. Open Page settings > SEO settings.
  3. Switch Sitemap indexing to off.
  4. Publish the site.

Webflow documents the resulting tag as:

<meta content="noindex" name="robots">

The toggle also excludes the static page from the sitemap.

How can the published change be checked?

Google's noindex troubleshooting guidance recommends the URL Inspection tool in Search Console to examine the HTML Googlebot receives. Googlebot is Google's search crawler. The check is whether the published page exposes the noindex tag to that crawler.

Google must fetch the page to read the tag. A robots.txt file, which controls crawler access, can prevent that fetch if it blocks the URL. Google's documentation says the page can then remain in search results when other pages link to it.

The same guidance identifies the Page Indexing report in Search Console as a way to monitor pages from which Googlebot has extracted a noindex rule.

FAQ

How do I allow indexing again?

Webflow's re-enabling instructions say to switch Sitemap indexing to on in Page settings > SEO settings, then publish your site.

Why does my page still appear in Google after publishing?

Google's debugging guidance says it must crawl your page again to see the new tag, and a revisit can take months. You can request a recrawl through the URL Inspection tool and check that robots.txt allows access.
