How do I distinguish enquiry types in Plausible goals?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Send an enquiry type as a custom event property, then filter it in the dashboard or include its value in a separate goal definition.

Definition: A custom event property is a key-value pair attached to a recorded website action. As of October 2026, Plausible supports separating enquiry types through property filters in the dashboard or through goals that require a matching event name and property value.

Key facts

How is an enquiry type sent with an event?

Plausible's event properties guide shows a JavaScript event call with a props object as its second argument. The following illustrative adaptation uses an event named Enquiry and a property named type:

plausible('Enquiry', {props: {type: 'sales'}})

For a support enquiry, the same example uses type: 'support'. These are example labels chosen for this entry. Plausible's own example uses Sign Up with plan: 'pro' and variation: 'homepage-cta'.

The custom event tracking guide documents direct JavaScript calls for dynamic values, conditional logic and interactions beyond clicks. Class-based tracking attaches an event name to an HTML element and measures clicks on it.

How are separate enquiry goals configured?

Under Goals in site settings, + Add goal opens the creation form. Plausible's setup instructions specify Custom event as the trigger and require the event name to match exactly, including capitalisation. In the illustrative setup, the event name is Enquiry.

The property-filtered goal instructions require both the event name and property values to match. Applied to the example, a sales goal uses Enquiry with type=sales; a support goal uses Enquiry with type=support. The event tracking documentation also allows editing a goal's display name separately from its selected event.

A property attached to a goal becomes part of its conversion definition. A property sent with an event remains available for later dashboard filtering. For a funnel step that represents a specific enquiry type, the same property guide requires a defined goal containing that property constraint.

Where are the enquiry types checked?

Plausible's dashboard instructions place property configuration in site settings > Custom Properties. For the example, the property to add is type. A recorded event or pageview containing the property makes it available for filtering.

Clicking a custom event in the dashboard's Goals section opens the Properties tab for that event. Selecting type then exposes its values. The filter menu also offers Property, with operators including is and contains; suggestions depend on the selected period and existing filters.

FAQ

Why does my enquiry type show as (none)?

Plausible's explanation of missing values covers absent values, null, undefined, and events sent without the property. Filter by your enquiry event first: an unfiltered Properties tab also includes regular pageviews that may lack the property.

Can I put a customer's email address in the property?

The same custom properties documentation prohibits personally identifiable information, including email addresses and phone numbers. Use an enquiry category such as the illustrative sales value.

Why is my new goal empty after I configure it?

Plausible's event troubleshooting documentation states that past events are not backfilled when a goal is created. Trigger your event after creating the goal and check that its name matches exactly.
