Key facts

Which languages and devices does Google document?

Google's availability list covers translation into Arabic, Bengali, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Marathi, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. It covers mobile and desktop. These are the documented languages into which Google may translate results.

The same documentation says that users can also view the original result and access the page in its original language. Publishers have no opt-in step: the feature applies across pages and results according to the user's language.

How can a website disable translated results?

Google's translated results documentation directs publishers to notranslate to opt out of all translation features in Google Search. Google's robots specification provides this Google-specific meta tag:

<meta name="googlebot" content="notranslate">

The tag belongs in the page's HTML <head>. The specification also supports an HTTP response header for page-level rules:

X-Robots-Tag: notranslate

Google must be able to crawl the page to read these settings. Without notranslate, the specification describes further interaction after a translated-result click as taking place through Google Translate, which also translates links the visitor follows.

How can a site owner measure translated results?

Google's translated results guide directs site owners to the Search Appearance filter in Search Console's Performance report to monitor clicks and impressions.

The Search Console dimensions guide names the relevant option Translated results. Filter options appear only for result types for which the site has recorded impressions. The guide also identifies the bulk export field is_translated_result.

Search appearance groups table data by page. Filtered clicks are assigned to URLs, so the filtered total can include a click on another appearance of the same URL within the same results set. This matters when interpreting the translated-results click count.
