In short. AI answer reproducibility measures how consistently repeated searches return answer text and cited sources under recorded conditions.
Definition: AI answer reproducibility is the degree to which repeated searches with the same query and recorded conditions return consistent answers and cited sources. It can be assessed separately for answer text, source URLs and source order.
Key facts
- Zhang and colleagues' Source Coverage and Citation Bias study compares 55,936 queries across six AI search engines and two traditional search engines, using browser interactions and extracting user-facing citations.
- As of October 2026, Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, producing different responses and links.
- Google's explanation of search variation identifies newly available content and gradual ranking-system rollouts as reasons results change over time.
- Grossman and colleagues' repeat-query experiment tests 100 sampled queries twice across device and location settings, measuring similarity between returned sources.
What does the Source Coverage study control?
The study's experimental design starts with trending keywords, related questions and controversial questions. It collects its trending keyword inputs between 16 July and 10 August 2025 in the United States. Those dates describe the seed collection period.
The researchers use incognito browser sessions to reduce personalization. For the study's authenticated ChatGPT sessions, they disable memory and references to prior interactions. They parse response payloads, extract citations and count a URL only once within a response, even when it appears repeatedly.
The design captures a snapshot of visible citations; it does not establish a repeated-query stability rate. Its controls provide a starting point for repeat observations: keep the query and session conditions comparable, preserve each response, and distinguish repeated links within an answer from repeated searches.
Why can the same search produce different outputs?
Google's search variation guidance explains that new web content can change results within minutes or hours. Ranking improvements also take time to reach different data centers. Search context includes location, language and device type, and those contextual effects remain relevant when personalized recommendations are disabled.
Google's AI features documentation describes query fan-out: issuing related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop an answer. It also distinguishes AI Mode from AI Overviews by their potential use of different models and techniques. A reproducibility comparison therefore needs to identify the particular search feature alongside the engine name.
What do repeated measurements show?
In their April 2026 paper, Grossman and colleagues' Search Engine Inconsistency section compares repeated searches using mobile and desktop devices in Austin and Newark. With device and location held constant, average URL-set similarity is 0.66 for AI Overviews and 0.78 for traditional Google results.
The paper uses Jaccard similarity, a measure of shared sources that ranges from 0 for no shared sources to 1 for identical sets. It also uses rank-biased overlap, which gives more weight to agreement near the top of a ranked list. These measurements describe source overlap under the experiment’s device and location settings.
How should a website record repeat observations?
A practical observation sheet can adapt the browser controls in the Source Coverage methodology, adding the time and contextual fields identified in Google's variation guidance. This is a suggested record structure, with no sample results:
observation_time
exact_query
engine_and_search_feature
model_label_if_displayed
location_and_language
device_type
login_memory_and_session_settings
saved_answer_text
cited_urls_in_display_order
Preserve each answer before comparing it with later runs. Count duplicate URLs consistently, following the study's within-response deduplication rule. Compare source sets separately from their order, using the distinction between Jaccard similarity and rank-biased overlap in the repeat-query experiment. Keep results collected under changed device, location or query wording identifiable as separate conditions.

FAQ
Does an incognito session make an answer reproducible?
Incognito browsing is a personalization control in the Source Coverage study. You still need to record contextual conditions and repeat observations to measure consistency.
Should I change the wording between repeat searches?
Keep your exact query for the initial repeat comparison. The repeat-query experiment tests cosmetic edits separately, including contractions, abbreviations and question marks, and finds that these edits change returned sources.
