In short. AI visibility measures observed presence in AI answers through metrics whose counting units and coverage must be specified.
Definition: AI visibility is the observed presence of a brand, website or page in answers from AI assistants. Measurement describes what appears, how often it appears and which answers or services the observation covers.
Key facts
As of 17 October 2026, the following documentation describes distinct ways to measure that presence:
- Ahrefs' AI Visibility Metrics counts a brand mention once per answer, even when the name appears repeatedly.
- Bing's AI Performance documentation reports source citations across Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and selected partner integrations.
- Google's Search Console Help documents a dedicated report of link impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. An impression records a link shown to a user.
- Bing's Citation Share announcement defines a site's percentage of all citations for the same grounding query.
What does each measurement count?
A brand mention is an appearance of a brand name in answer text. A citation identifies a page as a source. Ahrefs' counting rules distinguish page citations from domain citations: an answer citing several pages from a domain still contributes a single domain citation. A report therefore needs to identify whether its unit is an answer, a page or a domain.
An impression also needs a definition tied to its source. Google's report documentation counts displayed links. Its chart aggregates by website: two results from the same site in an AI search feature count as a single impression. The Pages table aggregates by page, which can produce different totals.
Ahrefs' impressions methodology instead sums Google search volumes associated with prompts containing a brand appearance. This is a search-volume-based estimate of exposure. Reports should preserve that distinction when presenting impressions from different providers.
How is citation share calculated?
A grounding query is a phrase an AI system uses to retrieve supporting content, as described in Bing's AI Performance introduction. Bing's Citation Share definition can be represented by this ratio, expressed as a percentage:
site citations for a grounding query / all sites' citations for that query
The denominator is the citations across all sites for that query. The scope remains the query being measured.
Ahrefs uses a different calculation for AI Share of Voice: a brand's share of impressions relative to other tracked brands. The selection of tracked brands affects that comparison. A percentage labelled visibility therefore needs its metric definition and comparison scope alongside it.
How should a website track changes?
Bing's Compare feature overlays a previous reporting period on the current view and supports custom date ranges. Google's AI features guidance explains that AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, producing different responses and links. Recording the service and feature therefore matters when comparing observations.
A useful record preserves the reporting service, metric definition, counting unit and date range. Google's report export includes chart and table data, allowing those observations to be retained. For business outcomes, Google's website guidance recommends tracking conversions and time spent on the site alongside Search Console data.

FAQ
Does visibility measure visits to my website?
Visibility metrics record appearances, citations or estimated exposure. You can assess visits and subsequent actions separately; Google's measurement guidance recommends analytics for conversions and time spent on the site.
Can I compare percentages from different tools?
Check the denominator first. Bing's Citation Share uses citations across all sites for a grounding query, while Ahrefs' AI Share of Voice compares impressions among tracked brands.
Why can Google's chart and page totals differ?
Google's aggregation rules count by website in the unfiltered chart and by page in the Pages table. Check the aggregation before adding page rows together.
