AI Overviews country availability

The Citead team, updated

In short. AI Overviews availability depends on Google's published country, territory and language coverage, while individual queries determine whether an overview appears.

Definition: AI Overviews country availability describes the countries and territories where Google's search summaries with supporting links are available, together with their supported languages. As of 17 October 2026, Google publishes separate geographic and language lists in its AI Overviews help page.

Key facts

  • Google's AI Overviews help page lists France, the United Kingdom and the United States, alongside languages including French, English and Spanish.
  • Google's 20 May 2025 expansion announcement reports availability in more than 200 countries and territories and more than 40 languages at that rollout.
  • Google's website documentation requires a supporting page to be indexed and eligible for a Google Search snippet, meaning a short preview of its content.

Which countries and languages are supported?

The availability lists group locations into the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East & Africa. Examples include Brazil and Canada in the Americas; Australia, India and Japan in Asia-Pacific; and France, Germany and South Africa in the final group.

The language list includes Arabic, Bengali, English, French, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. It lists Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) separately. These are examples from the published lists; the help page provides the full geographic and language coverage.

Is the language tied to the country's main language?

Google's October 2024 expansion announcement explicitly gives the example of a Spanish speaker in the United States seeing AI Overviews in Spanish. Country coverage and language support therefore need separate checks when defining a target market. A multilingual audience can use a supported language beyond the country's main language, as Google's United States example illustrates.

How should availability be checked for a market?

A check records the date and looks up both the target location and the language. Google's explanation of search-result languages identifies the query language, the language used on Google and the searcher's location as inputs. Google's interface language helps determine result languages, while results can appear in other languages. Recording the query language and search location separately makes a market check easier to interpret.

What does availability change for a website?

Google's AI features documentation distinguishes access to the feature from eligibility of a supporting page. A page needs indexing and snippet eligibility to be considered as a supporting link. The same documentation specifies no additional technical requirements for AI Overviews.

Google also states that AI Overviews appear when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so they often do not trigger. A missing overview on an individual search is therefore insufficient to classify an entire country as unsupported.

FAQ

Can I see Spanish AI Overviews in the United States?

Google's October 2024 announcement uses precisely that example. Check the current country and language lists when assessing a particular market.

Does a supported country mean every search shows an overview?

Google's website documentation says AI Overviews often do not trigger because its systems assess whether they add value to classic Search. Country availability describes access to the feature; an individual query still has its own result.
