In short. Google AI Overviews summarize information in Search with supporting links, with page eligibility and content controls governed by Google Search documentation.
Definition: Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries in Google Search results that present key information with links to supporting web pages, as described in Google Search Help.
Key facts
- As of 17 October 2026, Google's website guidance says AI Overviews appear when its systems judge that they add value to classic Search.
- A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet, according to Google's technical requirements for AI features.
- Google's preview controls include
nosnippet, which prevents page content from serving as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. - Google's Search Console reporting documentation records a worldwide rollout of dedicated AI feature impressions reporting on 31 August 2026.
How do AI Overviews select supporting information?
Google's AI features guide describes query fan-out: issuing related searches across subtopics and data sources while developing a response. Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use this technique. Their models and techniques can differ, so their responses and supporting links can also differ.
An overview remains a summary within Search. Google Search Help describes AI Mode as a place to continue the conversation: on supported mobile experiences, a follow-up question entered through an overview carries the original search context into AI Mode.
What makes a website eligible?
Google's website guidance applies existing search engine optimization practices to AI Overviews. It recommends making important content available as text and allowing crawling through the site's hosting infrastructure. Google requires no special schema.org markup or new AI text file for these features.
How can a publisher control page content?
A robots meta tag is an HTML instruction that controls indexing or presentation in search results. Google's robots meta tag specification gives this example for Googlebot, Google's search crawler:
<meta name="googlebot" content="nosnippet">
Placed in the page's HTML <head>, this instruction suppresses text snippets and video previews in Google search results and prevents the content from serving as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A static image thumbnail may remain visible. Googlebot must be able to crawl the page to read the instruction; blocking that URL through robots.txt prevents it from reading these rules.
How is visibility measured?
An impression records a link being shown to a user. Google's AI feature performance report includes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, with breakdowns by page, country, device and date. The data also remains within the overall Search performance report.
Google's measurement definitions count a click when someone follows an overview's link to an external page. An AI Overview occupies a single search result position, which all its links share.
