In short. Change content-type defaults under Yoast SEO Settings, or use the Schema tab in the editor to override an individual post or page.
Definition: Page and article schema types identify a web page and its article content in structured data, a machine-readable description of that content. As of October 2026, Yoast SEO provides content-type defaults under Settings and individual overrides in the Schema tab of its editor controls.
Key facts
- Yoast's schema implementation guide describes WebPage as the default schema for pages and Article as the default for posts.
- Yoast's selector documentation states that changing a content-type default preserves individual items previously assigned a non-default setting.
- Yoast's Article specification describes an Article on a WebPage and requires the post type to support authorship and have an author.
How are the defaults changed?
Yoast's selector documentation gives this route through the WordPress dashboard:
Yoast SEO > Settings > Content types > Posts or Pages > Schema
The Schema section contains the default setting for the selected content type. After changing it, the Save changes button saves the configuration. The change applies to content of that type, with the exception of individual items whose schema setting already differs from the default.
The same documentation clarifies that posts have both Article and WebPage schema. Pages use WebPage by default.
How is one post or page overridden?
Yoast's implementation guide places the individual controls in the Schema tab of the Yoast SEO meta box or Yoast SEO sidebar while editing a post or page. The page-level choice specifies how that individual item's content is described.
The selector guide separates page options from article options. About Page describes the website's about page. Collection Page describes a list of other pages, such as a blog overview or post archive. Among the article options, Blog Post describes a blog post, while News Article describes a news article. These examples provide a basis for choosing a type that matches the content.
The same guide says themes, plugins and Yoast add-ons can change the available options. Consequently, the list displayed in an editor can differ between sites or post types.
What can prevent a valid override?
Yoast's selector guide explains that post types without authorship support cannot output Article schema because an Article requires an author. Its warning about overrides also gives a concrete example: choosing FAQ Page requires questions and answers with the corresponding structured markup. Applying the label to an ordinary page can produce validation errors or unexpected behavior.
Yoast's Article specification lists required properties, including headline, author and publisher, and says an Article node should be omitted when required fields are missing or invalid. The selector therefore operates alongside the plugin's validation rules.

Will changing the default replace my existing individual choices?
Yoast's selector documentation says the change excludes individual content previously changed to a non-default schema setting. Those individual choices remain in place.
Does the FAQ block affect the selected page type?
Yes. The same selector guide says a page containing a Yoast SEO FAQ block also receives FAQPage schema, in addition to its custom setting or default.
