Where do I set a Webflow page's meta description?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Set the Meta description field under Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings, then publish the site to the intended domain.

Definition: A meta description is a short summary of a page supplied as HTML metadata. As of October 2026, Webflow places the Meta description field in Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings; publishing the site makes the change live.

Key facts

  • Webflow's SEO metadata documentation places the Title tag and Meta description fields in each page's SEO settings, with descriptions specific to that page.
  • Webflow's publishing documentation requires selecting the destination domains before clicking Publish to selected domains.
  • Google's snippet documentation explains that a snippet, the summary displayed in a search result, can come from page content or the meta description.

Where is the field for a static page?

Webflow's Add SEO title and meta description gives this settings path:

Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings

The Meta description field accepts manually written text. The separate Title tag field supplies the title that typically appears in search results. Each page has its own SEO settings, so the home page and pricing page can carry different descriptions. Webflow provides no global description setting.

For the description itself, Google's guidance on quality meta descriptions recommends an accurate summary of the specific page. It sets no maximum description length, while explaining that displayed snippets are truncated as needed to fit the device width. A long description can therefore be stored without appearing in full in search results.

How do descriptions work on Collection pages?

A Collection groups content whose pages share a template, such as blog posts. Webflow's dynamic SEO instructions allow a shared pattern for the titles and descriptions of pages in a Collection.

The settings use the same Pages panel > Page settings > SEO settings path. Clicking Add field inserts dynamic data from a Collection field into the SEO settings. This lets a description pattern draw on each item's content. The documentation requires publishing after these settings change, just as it does for static pages.

How does the change reach the live site?

Webflow's publishing instructions give the sequence: open Publish from Site actions or Site settings, select the intended domains, and click Publish to selected domains.

The Webflow staging subdomain is a separate publishing destination from a custom domain. Publishing only to staging leaves the custom domain without those changes. For a public page on a custom domain, that domain must be selected when publishing the updated description.

Webflow's SEO troubleshooting guidance says search engines can take days, weeks, or months to index changed titles and descriptions. Publication and search-result updates therefore occur on different schedules.

FAQ

Can I set one description for the entire Webflow site?

Webflow's SEO documentation says its SEO settings apply to individual pages. For Collection pages, you can define a shared pattern using dynamic fields.

Why does Google show different text after I publish?

Google's snippet documentation says it primarily creates snippets from page content and may use the meta description when that provides a more accurate summary. Different searches can produce different snippets for the same page.
