In short. Shopify redirects require a broken source URL, so a page that still serves valid content prevents activation.
Definition: As of 17 October 2026, a Shopify URL redirect cannot override a valid page. It works only when the source URL is broken.
Key facts
- Shopify's redirect documentation says redirects from eligible broken URLs work immediately.
- Shopify's searchability documentation explains that an Unlisted product remains accessible through its direct URL.
- Google's HTTP status documentation distinguishes successful responses from redirects: when following a redirect, its crawlers process the final destination's content.
How does a source URL become eligible?
Shopify's visibility example sets a collection's Online store visibility to Hidden. Its URL returns a 404, the HTTP status for a missing page, allowing this redirect:
Redirect from: /collections/fall
Redirect to: /collections/summer
For products, the same documentation describes Draft status or removal from all sales channels as ways to make the source return a 404.
Does hiding a product from search free its URL?
Shopify's Managing searchability describes Unlisted products as accessible by direct URL. They disappear from Shopify-powered collection pages and storefront search, while their product pages remain available.
The same documentation compares Unlisted status with seo.hidden, a system metafield used to hide resources from search engines and sitemaps. Its comparison table shows that both settings preserve the product page on the Online Store. Applying the redirect eligibility rule therefore means that either setting alone leaves a working product URL ineligible for redirection.
Which other source restrictions apply?
Shopify's source restrictions exclude fixed paths including /products and /collections. Collection tag filter URLs also remain valid when no products match the tag, preventing redirects from those URLs.
How can activation be checked?
Google's status-code reference explains that servers generate HTTP status codes in response to browser or crawler requests. A 200 response passes the returned content for processing; a 301 indicates a permanent move. Checking the actual source response distinguishes a functioning redirect from a page that continues serving content.

FAQ
What happens if I make the collection visible again?
Shopify's visibility documentation says restoring Visible deletes the redirect automatically. You need to recreate it after hiding the collection again.
Does an error message alone prove the URL returns a 404?
Google's HTTP documentation describes a soft 404: a successful response whose content appears empty or contains an error message. You can check the HTTP response status alongside the visible page to distinguish these cases.
