How can a monetary amount represent a price range?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Use currency with value for one amount, or with minValue and maxValue for a monetary range.

Definition: Schema.org's MonetaryAmount represents a monetary value or range. Give it a currency, then use value for one amount or minValue and maxValue for lower and upper bounds.

Key facts

  • Schema.org describes MonetaryAmount as a monetary value or range and gives $50 USD and a bank-account range as examples. Its currency property identifies the currency in which the amount is expressed. MonetaryAmount
  • Schema.org's value guidance recommends Number for values on MonetaryAmount, and defines minValue as the lower value and maxValue as the upper value. QuantitativeValue
  • PriceSpecification represents a price or price range. Schema.org recommends MonetaryAmount for independent amounts such as a salary or credit card limit. PriceSpecification

How do value, minValue, and maxValue encode the amount?

Schema.org's MonetaryAmount page starts with the type's meaning: it can describe one amount or a range. A single object therefore has one currency field and either a value for a point amount or minValue and maxValue for the two bounds of a range. The page defines currency as the currency in which the amount is expressed, and defines the bounds as the upper and lower values of a characteristic or property.

These two JSON-LD objects show the two shapes. The first follows Schema.org's $50 USD example. The second uses the GBP range shown in the page's bank-account example, with numeric values as recommended for MonetaryAmount.

  "@type": "MonetaryAmount",
  "currency": "USD",
  "value": 50
}
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "MonetaryAmount",
  "currency": "GBP",
  "minValue": 100,
  "maxValue": 1000000
}

The second object describes a lower bound of 100 and an upper bound of 1000000 in the single currency supplied by currency. A range needs both bounds to communicate its interval. If only one numeric amount exists, value expresses that amount.

Which currency and number formats are documented?

Schema.org says that currency expects Text and lists standard formats such as an ISO 4217 currency format, for example USD, a cryptocurrency ticker such as BTC, or a well-known name such as Ithaca HOUR. The code belongs in currency; a currency symbol is not needed in the numeric property.

The same Schema.org documentation recommends Number for MonetaryAmount values. It also instructs publishers to use the digits 0123456789 and a full stop for a decimal point. A decimal amount can therefore be represented as a JSON number when that precision describes the amount on the page.

When is PriceSpecification the better type?

Schema.org describes PriceSpecification as a structured value for a price or price range and recommends it for the price of an Offer or Invoice. Its price property is the offer price of a product or a price component, while priceCurrency identifies that price's currency. MonetaryAmount is the documented choice for an independent amount, including a salary or credit card limit.

For a product page, Google's product structured data documentation, updated 10 December 2025, describes two main classes: product snippets for pages where people cannot directly purchase the product, and merchant listings for pages where customers can purchase products. It says that product information can appear in Google Search with price and other details, and that result enhancements are shown at the discretion of each experience and may change over time. That documentation gives the search context for product markup; the Schema.org type choice still follows what the amount describes.
