How do I compare search queries by country in Search Console?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Select the Queries table in the Performance report, compare countries through a country filter, and read the country values and Difference column.

Definition: As of October 2026, Search Console's Performance report compares search query performance between countries through a country comparison with the Queries table selected. Country identifies where the search originates.

Key facts

  • Google's dimensions documentation defines queries as the search terms that lead to a site and countries as the origin of searches.
  • Google's report overview lists clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position as available metrics.
  • Google's comparison documentation describes a Difference column for comparing values within each table row.

How is the query table prepared?

The date and search type filters set the reporting period and search category. Selecting Queries above the table groups rows by search term. Metric headings above the chart control the measures displayed.

Clicks count user clicks from Google Search results. Impressions count appearances in results. Click-through rate, abbreviated CTR, equals clicks divided by impressions. Average position measures the position of the site's topmost result; each query row has its own average.

How are countries compared side by side?

Google's advanced filtering instructions allow comparison on a dimension different from the table's grouping. The documented country example is USA versus France.

  1. With Queries selected, add or open a country filter.
  2. Select Compare in the filter dialog.
  3. Choose the countries and click Apply.

The query rows then show the country values and their Difference column. Selecting multiple countries in Filter mode combines their data. Compare mode displays them side by side.

How does a query filter change the report?

Google's filtering documentation allows simultaneous filters across dimensions. Clicking a query row filters the report to that query. For a phrase, the Queries containing option matches a substring, ignoring letter case but preserving spaces.

Google's query limitations explain that anonymized queries are withheld for privacy. They contribute to chart totals until a query filter is applied. Search Console also stores and displays only the most important rows, so the visible query list is incomplete even beyond anonymization.

FAQ

Can I compare countries and dates simultaneously?

Google's comparison limits allow one comparison at a time. Adding a date comparison replaces your country comparison.

Why does a country show a tilde for a query?

The same comparison documentation explains that ~ marks a value that is very rare in one group. You can filter to that query to see values for both groups.

Can I see queries for image-based multimodal searches?

Google's dimensions documentation states that the Queries dimension is unavailable for this search type because specific text query data is unavailable.
