How do I activate IndexNow in Rank Math?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Enable Instant Indexing, select post types, check the generated API key, and save the settings to activate automatic IndexNow submissions in Rank Math.

Definition: IndexNow is a protocol for notifying participating search engines about changed website URLs. Rank Math activates these notifications through its Instant Indexing module, with an automatically generated ownership key and selectable content types.

Key facts

  • As of 17 October 2026, Rank Math's IndexNow guide documents the feature in Rank Math Free.
  • Rank Math's mode-switching guide locates the Easy/Advanced switch at the dashboard's top right.
  • IndexNow's protocol documentation explains that search engines fetch a hosted text key to verify ownership.

Where is IndexNow activated?

The Rank Math setup instructions specify enabling Instant Indexing from WordPress Dashboard → Rank Math SEO. Configuration follows this settings path:

Rank Math SEO → Instant Indexing → Settings

The selected post types determine which content is submitted automatically. The API Key field should contain a generated key before Save Changes saves the preferences. Advanced Mode exposes the Instant Indexing settings.

Rank Math's mode-switching instructions provide two routes to Advanced Mode. The dashboard switch remains available after initial setup; the Setup Wizard also offers the mode choice. The wizard is accessible from WordPress Dashboard → Rank Math SEO → Dashboard → Setup Wizard. Advanced Mode exposes settings that Easy Mode hides.

How is the ownership key checked?

Rank Math's key management instructions describe automatic key generation and dynamic hosting. Check Key, beneath API Key location, opens the hosted key; its text should appear, and robots.txt must allow access. Change Key generates a replacement.

The IndexNow protocol requires a hosted text file that contains the key. Its root-directory option uses a UTF-8 file named after that key. After a submission, the search engine fetches the file and continues using the key until it changes.

The official FAQ also identifies login requirements, firewall restrictions, and mismatched file contents as verification problems. The displayed text must match the submitted key.

What is submitted automatically?

The Rank Math guide describes notifications when configured post types are created, updated, or deleted. URLs marked NoIndex are excluded from automatic submission.

The IndexNow FAQ identifies product description changes, price or availability updates, and removed products as notification cases. It recommends meaningful content changes over cosmetic layout adjustments. An XML sitemap supplies a broader inventory, including pages that change infrequently, while IndexNow reports recent changes.

FAQ

Can I submit a URL manually?

Yes. Rank Math's manual submission instructions direct you to Instant Indexing → Submit URLs, with one URL per line.

Does a successful submission mean the page is indexed?

The IndexNow documentation defines HTTP 200 as receipt of the submitted URL. The official FAQ explains that each engine decides whether to index a page using its own criteria; you can check its inspection or reporting tools.
