How can shippingDetails restrict delivery to regions or postal codes?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Use either addressRegion or postalCode inside shippingDestination to describe the delivery area for an offer.

Definition: In product structured data, shippingDetails.shippingDestination uses a DefinedRegion to describe where a shipping offer applies. Google documents two alternatives for that region: an administrative subdivision in addressRegion, or postal codes in postalCode.

Key facts

  • Google's merchant listing documentation says to choose either addressRegion or postalCode for a DefinedRegion.
  • If both properties are omitted, Google defines the region as the whole country named by addressCountry.
  • addressRegion uses a two or three digit ISO 3166-2 subdivision code without the country prefix. Google gives NY, NSW, and 03 as examples.
  • Google documents postal code support for Australia, Canada, and the US, with 94043 as its example.
  • Schema.org describes DefinedRegion as a geographic area defined by potentially arbitrary criteria and says its properties can define a region by sets of postal codes.

How does shippingDestination define the delivery area?

The shippingDestination property sits inside OfferShippingDetails and identifies the destination associated with a shipping rate and delivery time. In Google's merchant listing documentation, updated 8 September 2026, DefinedRegion is described as a way to create custom areas across multiple shipping services. The same page says that shippingDetails can be repeated when a product has multiple shipping options, with different combinations of shippingRate and deliveryTime.

Schema.org's DefinedRegion definition describes the type as a geographic area defined by potentially arbitrary criteria. Its examples include a delivery destination when shopping and a region where regional pricing is configured. In this model, addressCountry supplies the country and the selected regional property narrows the destination.

What is the difference between addressRegion and postalCode?

addressRegion identifies an administrative subdivision. Google's merchant listing documentation specifies an ISO 3166-2 subdivision code without a country prefix. The documented examples are NY for New York in the US, NSW for New South Wales in Australia, and 03 for Iwate in Japan. Schema.org describes addressRegion more generally as the region containing a locality and gives California, an Italian province, and a German region as examples.

postalCode identifies the postal code itself. Google's documentation gives 94043 as an example and lists Australia, Canada, and the US as the countries with documented postal code support for this markup. Schema.org's postalCode property defines it as the postal code and also uses 94043 as its example.

The two forms express different boundaries. A region code selects an administrative area, while a postal code selects the postal delivery area represented by that code. Google states that multiple regions can be listed, but different ways of specifying regions cannot be mixed in the same DefinedRegion instance.

What should the markup look like?

Google's free-shipping example uses a DefinedRegion with addressCountry set to US and addressRegion set to an array containing NY. A postal-code alternative keeps the same destination type and replaces addressRegion with postalCode.

{
  "shippingDetails": {
    "@type": "OfferShippingDetails",
    "shippingDestination": {
      "@type": "DefinedRegion",
      "addressCountry": "US",
      "addressRegion": ["NY"]
    }
  }
}

For a postal-code destination, the corresponding field is postalCode, for example:

{
  "shippingDestination": {
    "@type": "DefinedRegion",
    "addressCountry": "US",
    "postalCode": "94043"
  }
}

FAQ

Can one DefinedRegion contain both an address region and a postal code?

No. Google says to choose either addressRegion or postalCode and says not to provide both a region and postal code information.

What happens when neither regional field is supplied?

Google defines the whole country as the region when both addressRegion and postalCode are omitted.
