Where do I enter product identifiers in PrestaShop?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Enter product identifiers under Details > References in the redesigned editor or Options > Condition & References in the earlier layout.

Definition: As of October 2026, PrestaShop's version 8 documentation places product identifier fields under Details > References in its redesigned product editor and Options > Condition & References in the earlier layout. These fields hold the shop's internal reference, the manufacturer's part number and product barcode identifiers.

Key facts

Where are the fields in the product editor?

PrestaShop's product page guide gives this back office starting path:

Catalog > Products

After opening a product, the redesigned editor groups its identifier fields under Details > References, as shown in the official editor specification. That specification lists separate inputs for the book identifier, barcode numbers and manufacturer part number.

For the earlier layout, the Managing Products guide places Condition & References in the Options tab. The same guide documents a Save button that stores changes and keeps the editor on the current tab. The tab names therefore determine which route applies to the editor in use.

Which identifier belongs in each field?

The field descriptions in PrestaShop's Managing Products guide distinguish the internal reference from externally assigned identifiers:

  • Reference code holds the shop's own reference. The guide allows a number, a storage location reference or a supplier reference that identifies the product.
  • MPN, meaning manufacturer part number, holds the manufacturer's product reference.
  • EAN-13 or JAN barcode holds the corresponding product barcode number. The guide describes EAN-13 as an international article number with 13 digits and JAN as the Japanese identifier compatible with EAN.
  • UPC barcode holds a UPC barcode identifier. The guide describes its use in markets including the United States and Canada.
  • ISBN identifies books and their editions internationally.

The same guide also documents a supplier table with a reference and unit price or currency for each product combination, per supplier. A supplier-specific reference can therefore be recorded alongside the product's other identifiers.

Where do identifiers for variations go?

PrestaShop calls variations of a product combinations. Its Managing Products guide explains that these share a product name while differing by attributes such as color or capacity.

In that guide's combination editor, the edit icon opens the details for a specific combination. Reference and Specific references provides fields for its reference, ISBN, EAN-13 and UPC. The guide notes that warehouses or carriers may use these numbers. For a catalog with combinations, checking identifiers includes opening the relevant combination's details and reviewing its fields.

FAQ

Can I use my supplier's code as the product reference?

Yes. PrestaShop's Managing Products guide explicitly allows a supplier reference in Reference code. You can also record supplier-specific references in the supplier table.

Where do I enter a book's identifier?

Use ISBN for the book and its edition. The same guide documents an ISBN field for the product and a separate ISBN field when editing a combination.

Why do I see Details instead of Options?

The official product editor specification groups barcode identifiers under Details > References. If your editor follows that layout, use that section; the earlier guide's route uses Options > Condition & References.
