How are product and category URL suffixes configured in Adobe Commerce?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Adobe Commerce configures product and category URL suffixes separately and documents redirects for URL key changes.

Definition: As of October 2026, Adobe Commerce configures product and category URL suffixes through separate settings in Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization. Each field controls whether a suffix such as html or htm is applied to its URL type, and the suffix is entered without a period.

Key facts

  • Adobe Commerce exposes separate Product URL Suffix and Category URL Suffix fields, each with Store View scope in the configuration reference.
  • The suffix is a system setting. Typing it into a product or category URL key produces a double suffix, according to Adobe's catalog and product URLs documentation.
  • Adobe's configuration reference lists html and htm as examples and says the period is applied automatically.
  • The automatic redirects documentation documents permanent redirects for product or category URL key changes.

Where are the two suffix fields configured?

Open the catalog configuration and expand Search Engine Optimization:

Stores > Settings > Configuration > Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization

Set Product URL Suffix for product addresses and Category URL Suffix for category addresses. Adobe's configuration reference assigns both fields to the Store View scope. A value such as html is stored without the period, and Commerce applies the period when the suffix is present.

The settings control the address ending generated for each catalog type. For example, Adobe shows a product URL with a suffix as http://mystore.com/helena-hooded-fleece.html and a product URL without one as http://mystore.com/helena-hooded-fleece. The same documentation says to use one consistent suffix setting for product and category pages.

What must stay out of a URL key?

A URL key is the part of a static URL that describes a product or category. Adobe says the initial key is generated from the name, and it specifies lowercase characters with hyphens between words. The suffix belongs to configuration, so a key should contain the words only:

URL Key: helena-hooded-fleece
Product URL Suffix: html
Result: helena-hooded-fleece.html

Entering helena-hooded-fleece.html as the key while Product URL Suffix is html causes the suffix to be applied twice. The same rule applies to a category URL key and the Category URL Suffix field.

What happens to existing catalog URLs?

The documented automatic redirect control concerns a URL key change. In Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization, set Create Permanent Redirect for URLs if URL Key Changed to Yes. When this is enabled, Adobe says the product or category record can create a permanent redirect from the old URL after the key changes. The record's Create Permanent Redirect for old URL checkbox must remain selected when the key is updated.

Create Permanent Redirect for URLs if URL Key Changed: Yes
Create Permanent Redirect for old URL: selected

Adobe's category guidance warns that changing a category name can break existing product links when product URLs include the category path. It points to the automatic redirect setting or the URL Rewrite tool for redirecting an old URL to a new one.

The separate Generate “category/product” URL Rewrites setting has a more specific restriction. Adobe warns that turning off automatic generation permanently removes existing category/product type URL rewrites, and those records cannot be restored. The configuration reference also states that this setting does not change how Commerce resolves product URLs.

How should a configuration change be checked?

After setting the two fields, click Save Config. Adobe's catalog URL instructions then direct the administrator to open Cache Management from the system message and refresh the invalid cache. Open a product and a category on the storefront to inspect the resulting endings. Adobe documents examples with .html, .htm, and no suffix; its instructions say the period is added automatically when a suffix is configured.

Adobe's catalog URL page does not specify that changing a suffix field automatically creates redirects. Its redirect instructions are explicit for URL key changes, so a suffix change on a live catalog needs separate URL handling for older addresses.

FAQ

Can the suffix be entered in the URL key?

No. Adobe says the suffix is controlled by system configuration and entering it in a product or category URL key creates a double suffix.

Are product and category suffixes configured together?

They are separate fields: Product URL Suffix controls product URLs and Category URL Suffix controls category URLs. Both fields use Store View scope.

Does the URL key redirect setting cover a suffix change?

Adobe documents the setting for URL key changes. The catalog URL documentation does not state that editing a suffix field creates a redirect for an older suffix format.
