In short. HubSpot manages automatic canonical URLs under Content > Pages > SEO & Crawlers, with individual content overrides taking priority.
Definition: A canonical URL identifies the preferred address for duplicate or similar content. HubSpot manages its automatic canonical URLs through website settings, with individual content overrides taking precedence.
Key facts
- As of October 2026, HubSpot's canonical URL documentation describes self-referencing defaults for new pages and posts, and no automatic canonical for blog listings.
- Google's canonicalization guidance treats a canonical link as a strong signal for selecting a preferred URL.
- Google's URL Inspection documentation distinguishes the declared canonical from the address Google selects for indexing.
Where are the default controls?
HubSpot's settings instructions place these controls under Content > Pages, in SEO & Crawlers. The Pages and blog posts and Blog listing pages fields control their respective defaults. Changes are saved with Save at the bottom left.
Disabling automatic canonicals for pages and posts requires manual canonical configuration. HubSpot recommends retaining the default that gives each new page or post its own canonical address.
What takes precedence, and what happens to listings?
HubSpot's override instructions give individually configured canonicals priority over website defaults. The editor exposes these under Settings > Advanced > Customize canonical URL; Publish or Update applies the change.
For blog listings, HubSpot warns that pointing the whole series to its initial listing page can prevent search engines from finding later pages.
What should the published HTML contain?
Google's HTML canonical guidance places the canonical link in the document's <head>. Its example uses an absolute URL:
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/dresses/green-dresses" />
This is Google's illustrative address. The corresponding value on a website identifies that content's preferred URL. The same guidance recommends a self-referencing link on the preferred page, consistent canonical destinations across methods, and internal links to the preferred address. A sitemap is a file listing site URLs; Google treats inclusion in it as a weaker canonical signal than a canonical link.
How is Google's selected URL checked?
Google's URL Inspection report accepts a complete URL from the currently selected Search Console property. Its indexed report exposes User-declared canonical and Google-selected canonical under Page indexing.
The report describes the indexed version, which can precede a recent settings change. The live test checks the current page's accessibility for indexing; canonical selection is available in indexed data. Comparing the declared and selected fields establishes whether Google uses the intended address or chooses another version.
