In short. Use out_of_stock when orders stop, match the page and checkout, and set the existing offer markup to https://schema.org/OutOfStock.
Definition: As of 17 October 2026, Google Merchant Center uses
out_of_stockwhen orders are not accepted for a product or it is unavailable for purchase. Its availability documentation requires consistent availability across the landing page, checkout, product data, and any structured data.
Key facts
- Merchant Center's availability attribute specification distinguishes
out_of_stock,backorder, andpreorderaccording to whether orders are accepted and whether the product has been released. - Google's product data specification requires the price to remain clearly visible on an out-of-stock product's landing page.
- Google Search Central's merchant listing documentation supports
https://schema.org/OutOfStockas an offer's availability value. - Merchant Center's mismatch troubleshooting guide identifies delays between website and product data updates as a common cause of incorrect availability.
Which availability value applies?
A feed is a product data source submitted to Merchant Center. Google's availability documentation specifies out_of_stock for a temporary stockout when the merchant stops accepting orders. The XML feed field is:
<g:availability>out_of_stock</g:availability>
If orders remain open for an existing product awaiting replenishment, the value is backorder. The value preorder applies to an unreleased product. Both require availability_date, with the expected date also visible on the landing page.
Temporary stockouts can remain in the data source. Permanently discontinued products are removed from it.
How should the page and markup match?
The landing page is the product page opened from a listing. Google's product data specification requires availability to match across that page, checkout, the submitted data, and structured data. It also requires a visible price even when stock runs out.
Structured data is machine-readable information embedded in a page. Google Search Central's merchant listing guide places availability in an Offer, the object describing the product's sale terms. The following excerpt belongs inside the existing offer:
{
"availability": "https://schema.org/OutOfStock"
}
The excerpt shows only the availability field. The feed uses out_of_stock; the offer uses the Schema.org URL shown above. The same guide recommends placing Product structured data in the initial HTML and warns that dynamically generated markup can make Shopping crawls less frequent and less reliable for changing availability.
How are mismatches checked and corrected?
Merchant Center's troubleshooting guide recommends scheduling product data updates to coincide with store updates. A mismatch notice can reflect an earlier crawl even after the values agree. Affected products appear under Products > Needs attention; corrected product data can be uploaded again.
Google's automatic updates documentation describes using landing-page markup and other extracted product information to update availability in Merchant Center. These automations address occasional inaccuracies and require continued regular product data updates. Google recommends the Merchant API when availability changes frequently.

FAQ
What should customers see when a product sells out?
Google's availability requirements allow clear text such as “sold out” or “item not available”, or a disabled buy button. If you offer several variants, unavailable options can be disabled individually; each variant's feed availability must match its landing page.
Can I use out_of_stock just to stop showing an available product?
Google's mismatch guide directs you to pause for a temporary pause or excluded_destination for a longer exclusion. The availability value describes whether the product can be purchased.
How can I check the structured data?
Google Search Central's merchant listing guide recommends the Rich Results Test to validate the code and URL Inspection to check how Google sees the page. You can compare the detected availability with the visible stock message and submitted feed value.
