In short. Select Sources below or within a Gemini response to open related links in a panel on the right.
Definition: The Sources button in Gemini Apps opens a panel of links related to a response. As of 17 October 2026, Google's help places this button below the answer or inline within it, with the panel opening on the right.
Key facts
- Google's sources help explains that links can lead to public websites, uploaded files, or documents and emails from a connected Google Workspace account.
- Google's Connected Apps instructions say that connections can be managed in Connected Apps settings; the available apps vary by device, country, and Gemini app.
- Google's response guidance warns that Gemini can give inaccurate explanations of its own functions, including how it cites sources.
Where does the sources panel open?
Google's instructions for finding sources identify the Sources button at the bottom of a response or within the response itself. Selecting it opens a side panel on the right containing the relevant links. Selecting a link provides access to the associated content.
The same documentation explains the missing-button case: some responses have no related links or sources. When Gemini supplies no links for a particular response, the Sources button is absent. The panel is therefore a feature of responses with supplied links.
Which response content has documented source links?
Google's source-link guidance describes specific treatment for quotations, code repositories, and images from the web.
When Gemini directly quotes a large amount of text from a webpage, the sources list includes a link to that page. A citation to a code repository can also reference the applicable open source license. When an answer contains an image from the web, Gemini shows its source and a link to it.
These details provide different things to inspect: the webpage behind quoted text, licensing information accompanying repository citations, or the origin of a web image.
What can the linked content include?
Google's description of related content includes both public webpages and content supplied through uploads or a Google Workspace connection. A linked document or email can therefore belong to the connected Workspace context.
For personal accounts, Google's Connected Apps help requires sign-in to use connected apps. On a computer, the documented route to connection settings starts with Customize in the sidebar, followed by Connectors at the top. If Customize is absent, the instructions first direct the reader to More. The settings page lists apps available for the account type and current Gemini app.
