Must flashcard answers be visible to users for Google's education Q&A feature?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Flashcard questions must be immediately visible, and answers represented in structured data must be visible page content that Google can access.

Definition: Google’s Education Q&A guidance requires flashcard questions to be immediately visible on the page. It also requires a question and answer pairing, while Google’s general structured data policy says that content described by markup must be visible to readers.

Key facts

  • Google describes a flashcard page as a page with a question on one side and an answer on the other, and uses Quiz structured data for this page type in its Education Q&A documentation.
  • The feature-specific technical guideline says questions should be immediately visible to users, rather than held only in a data file or PDF. Google’s Education Q&A documentation states this directly.
  • The same documentation requires at least one education-related question and answer pairing, with an answer that relates to and answers the user’s question.
  • Google’s general structured data guidelines say not to mark up content that is not visible to readers and require structured data to represent the page content.

What must a flashcard page show?

The answer is yes for the page’s substantive content, with a qualification about timing. Google explicitly requires the questions to be immediately visible. It also requires the page to contain an education-related question and answer pairing. The acceptedAnswer value in the markup should therefore correspond to answer content that readers can access on the page, rather than text that exists only in JSON-LD.

Google’s general policy gives the visibility rule its wider scope: “Don't mark up content that is not visible to readers of the page.” It gives an example in which the HTML body must describe the same performer as the JSON-LD. Applied to a flashcard, the answer represented by acceptedAnswer needs corresponding page content.

Does the answer have to be visible before a user interacts?

Google’s Education Q&A page uses the phrase “immediately visible” for questions. It does not use that phrase in the feature-specific technical guideline for answers. The documented requirement is that the page contains a related question and answer pairing, and the general structured data policy requires marked-up content to be visible to readers.

That wording leaves room for an answer to be revealed by a normal flashcard interaction, provided the answer is part of the page content that users can access. An answer stored only in a data file, PDF, or JSON-LD does not meet the visibility rule for the corresponding content. This is an interpretation of the two Google guidelines, because the Education Q&A page does not define a separate initial-render rule for answers.

What other access checks apply?

Visibility for readers is only one part of the implementation. Google says the page must be accessible to Google and not blocked by a robots.txt file, a noindex tag, or login requirements. Its general structured data guidance also says not to block structured data pages to Googlebot with robots.txt, noindex, or another access-control method.

The page must use Flashcard for every eduQuestionType value. Google says pages containing other question types are not eligible for the education Q&A carousel. A minimal question and answer item follows the structure in Google’s example:

{
  "@type": "Question",
  "eduQuestionType": "Flashcard",
  "text": "This is some fact about receptor molecules.",
  "acceptedAnswer": {
    "@type": "Answer",
    "text": "receptor molecules"
  }
}

Google also says that inaccurate content can make all or a subset of a site’s Education Q&A pages ineligible until the issues are resolved.

FAQ

Can the answer exist only in acceptedAnswer?

No. Google’s general structured data guidelines require marked-up content to be visible to readers. The answer should have corresponding content on the page.

Must every answer be visible immediately?

Google explicitly uses “immediately visible” for questions. It requires the page to contain a related question and answer pairing, but does not separately define the initial display state of answers.

Can login access protect the flashcards?

Google’s Education Q&A guidance says the page must be accessible to Google and not require login. A login wall therefore conflicts with the documented access condition.
