FAQPage structured data

The Citead team, updated

In short. FAQPage describes FAQ content with Schema.org markup, while Google ends its FAQ rich result feature from 7 May 2026.

Definition: FAQPage structured data is markup that describes a web page containing frequently asked questions. It uses the Schema.org vocabulary to represent the page and its questions, with answers linked to those questions.

Key facts

  • Schema.org defines FAQPage as a subtype of WebPage presenting one or more frequently asked questions.
  • Schema.org's Question definition includes the acceptedAnswer property, which connects a question to an accepted answer.
  • Google's documentation updates record the end of FAQ rich results in Google Search from 7 May 2026 and the removal of the feature documentation on 15 June 2026.
  • As of 17 October 2026, the Schema.org Markup Validator documentation describes a tool that extracts structured data and identifies syntax mistakes.

How are questions and answers represented?

The page's mainEntity property identifies its primary subject. For an FAQ, that subject can be a collection of Question objects. Schema.org's FAQPage property table includes mainEntity among the properties inherited from CreativeWork, the broader type for creative content.

JSON-LD is a format for embedding structured data in a script element, as described in Google's structured data introduction. The following illustrative fragment uses the structure shown in Schema.org's Question example: a Question has a name and an acceptedAnswer, whose type is Answer and whose text contains the answer. The fragment places that question inside a FAQPage.

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "What is FAQPage?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "FAQPage describes a web page containing frequently asked questions."
      }
    }
  ]
}
</script>

The question and answer in this illustration describe the vocabulary itself. An implementation uses the actual questions and answers published on the page.

A rich result is a search result enhanced through structured data, as defined in Google's introduction to structured data. Google's documentation changelog records that FAQ rich results cease appearing from 7 May 2026. Its June entry records the removal of the FAQ feature documentation because the feature is no longer shown.

The Schema.org type remains defined in the vocabulary. For a website audit, the distinction matters: an existing FAQPage block describes content, while Google's changelog determines the status of Google's FAQ display feature. Correcting the block's syntax cannot restore a retired display feature.

How can the markup be checked?

The Schema.org validator documentation describes validation from either a page URL or directly supplied markup. The tool displays a summary of the extracted structured data graph, meaning the entities and relationships found in the markup, and identifies syntax mistakes. This allows a reviewer to inspect whether the page, question and answer appear with the intended connections.

Content matching needs a separate review. Google's general structured data guidelines, updated 10 July 2026, require the markup to represent the page content accurately and prohibit marking up content hidden from readers. An FAQ review therefore compares the question names and answer text in the markup with the visible page, alongside checking syntax.

FAQ

Can I switch an FAQ to QAPage?

Google's QAPage guidelines, updated 8 September 2026, reserve that markup for pages focused on a single question and its answers. They explicitly exclude an FAQ written by the site itself where users cannot submit alternative answers.

Can I keep answers only inside JSON-LD?

Google's structured data guidelines require the marked-up content to be visible to readers. Publish the questions and answers on the page as well as representing them in the markup.

Do I need FAQPage for Google's AI features?

As of 17 October 2026, Google's AI features guidance says that AI Overviews and AI Mode require no special Schema.org structured data. The same guidance calls for important content in textual form and structured data that matches visible text.
