Ecosia AI Overviews

The Citead team, updated

In short. Ecosia AI Overviews summarize information above search results with source links and can be disabled in website settings.

Definition: As of 17 October 2026, Ecosia AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries displayed above Ecosia’s web search results. They combine information from multiple sources and include links to source pages.

Key facts

  • Ecosia’s search features guide describes Overviews as summary boxes at the top of results, combining information from multiple sources.
  • Ecosia’s AI search help lists supported countries and says AI Overviews are enabled by default for users with access.
  • The settings documentation says an Overview appears only when Ecosia’s systems judge it likely to be helpful and reliable for the query.

What appears in the search results?

Ecosia’s search features guide describes a short, readable answer assembled from multiple top sources. It also describes AI Chat as a conversational interface supporting follow-up questions. Overviews provide the summary box on the results page; AI Chat provides the conversation.

The same guide separately lists other results-page features, including definitions, calculators and weather information. These are useful distinctions when identifying which type of answer a search displays. A definition or calculator result alone does not identify an AI Overview.

Where are AI Overviews available?

Ecosia’s AI search help lists France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Portugal, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Canada. It describes availability across all search providers, devices and browser types, while also stating that access varies by user.

The same help page says the settings option appears only for users who have access. Users without access may still see Instant Answers, which Ecosia describes as a non-AI feature. Country coverage and the presence of an answer box therefore require separate checks when recording an observation.

How are summaries controlled?

Ecosia’s settings guide explains how to open website settings through the profile icon. The Overviews setting appears when the feature is available for the selected region and search provider. The AI search help gives this control path:

Ecosia search settings > AI Overviews > uncheck the box

The settings guide also documents “AI-free searching”. Enabling it disables Overviews and removes AI Chat from navigation and autocomplete. It also disables automatic routing into AI Chat.

Settings are saved in browser cookies and are separate for each browser and device, including for signed-in users. Blocking or deleting cookies can reset the preference.

FAQ

Why do I see Overviews on some searches only?

The settings guide says they appear for selected queries when Ecosia’s systems judge them likely to be helpful and reliable. You can have access to the feature without seeing a summary on every search.

Can I rely on every statement in an Overview?

Ecosia’s AI search help warns that Overviews can contain incorrect or outdated information. It recommends double-checking important information and provides feedback controls for reporting incorrect content.
