Can Browse with Copilot access Edge's saved passwords or wallet?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Browse with Copilot cannot access Edge autofill data, saved passwords, or wallet information.

Definition: No. Microsoft states that Browse with Copilot cannot access Edge autofill data, saved passwords, or wallet information while it browses and interacts with webpages. It can use other parts of the active browser context, including cookies and open tabs.

Key facts

  • Microsoft's Browse with Copilot help lists autofill data, saved passwords, and wallet information as restricted Edge profile information.
  • Browse with Copilot uses the current browser window and has limited Edge profile access. The same help page says this is not unrestricted access to all profile data.
  • Copilot can access cookies. A site where you are already signed in can therefore remain signed in when Copilot has access to that site.
  • The Edge page dated 30 July 2026 describes Wallet as retired and places stored passwords, payments, and personal information in the Passwords and autofill section of Edge settings.
  • Microsoft says Browse with Copilot can capture screenshots of pages it visits, and that these screenshots are never used for training.

What does the restriction cover?

The restriction applies to three named categories: autofill data, saved passwords, and wallet information. Microsoft's Browse with Copilot help describes page actions separately: Browse with Copilot can click, type, scroll, and move through tabs in the local Edge browser. The feature can work in the current tab or open a new tab in the same window, and you can interrupt it or take control at any time.

Microsoft's Microsoft Password Manager page says it stores passwords and passkeys, and that a saved password can be reused on a device where you sign in to Edge with your Microsoft account. Those credentials remain part of the password-management function that Browse with Copilot is documented as unable to access.

What can Browse with Copilot use instead?

Cookies form a separate boundary. Microsoft's Browse with Copilot documentation says Copilot can access cookies, so an existing signed-in session can be available on a site that Copilot is allowed to access. This means a task can encounter a logged-in webpage without receiving the saved password that created the session. Microsoft recommends deleting cookies before browsing with Copilot or starting with a brand-new browser profile when that session should be absent.

Open tabs are also part of the documented working context. Copilot can use tabs in the current browser window, including for summarizing multiple tabs or acting on an existing tab after you ask. Its page screenshots are tied to the tabs on which it works. Microsoft says those screenshots are saved with the conversation, deleted when the conversation is deleted, and otherwise retained for up to 30 days.

What does wallet mean in current Edge documentation?

As of 30 July 2026, Microsoft's Edge Wallet documentation describes the feature as retired. The replacement location is Settings > Passwords and autofill, where Microsoft says users can still manage stored passwords, payments, and personal information. A separate Edge payment information page says saved debit and credit card information can be autofilled at checkout when the Save and fill payment info setting is enabled.

Settings > Passwords and autofill

The wallet label therefore refers to browser-stored payment and personal information as well as passwords. The Browse with Copilot restriction names wallet information directly, so moving these records to another settings section does not change the documented access boundary.

How can you reduce the browser context available to Copilot?

Microsoft's Context Clues help says browsing context can include the URL, page title, page content or screenshots, and browsing history. It provides this Edge setting:

Settings > Copilot and AI > Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web

Turning Context Clues off prevents Copilot from using browsing data for questions and requests based on websites or browsing data. The Browse with Copilot help gives separate browser controls and warnings: Microsoft advises avoiding banking, stock trading, credit card details, personal identifiers, and highly confidential data, and says to monitor the feature because it is experimental.

FAQ

Can Copilot fill a saved password into a webpage?

Microsoft's Browse with Copilot documentation says it cannot access saved passwords or autofill data. If a task requires personal or payment information, Copilot asks you to take control and enter it yourself.

Can Copilot use a logged-in website?

Microsoft says in the Browse with Copilot documentation that it can access cookies, so a site that is already signed in can remain signed in when Copilot has access to that site. This is session access through cookies, separate from reading the saved password.

Does turning off Context Clues remove saved passwords from Edge?

No. Microsoft's Context Clues documentation says the setting controls whether Copilot uses browsing data such as page content, screenshots, and history. Edge keeps password and autofill management in its own Passwords and autofill settings.
