Definition: Claude's web image results are powered by Bing Image Search. Claude displays selected images beside its text response and gives each image a source link to the original page.

Key facts

  • Image search is part of Claude web search. Claude can search for and display images in the conversation when web search is enabled, according to Claude's web search help.
  • Claude selects images from web search results powered by Bing and displays them alongside its text response. The same help page says each image includes a source link to the original page.
  • Anthropic's visual and interactive content guidance names Bing Image Search as the service powering image results.
  • Anthropic says anonymized click data is sent to Bing when a user clicks a URL associated with an image. Data sent to Bing is subject to Microsoft's privacy policy.
  • Bing's content removal form distinguishes a Source Page URL from a Source Image URL. A Bing search-result URL is not the original location of the image.

Which service supplies the images?

Anthropic's visual-content guidance, dated March 16, 2026, identifies Bing Image Search as the provider for image results. Claude's web search help describes the same flow in product terms: it selects images from web search results powered by Bing and places them beside the written response. The provider named in the documentation is therefore Bing for this image-result function.

The feature is part of web search. Claude's help page says that, with web search enabled, Claude can search for and display images directly in the conversation. It also lists visual matching, product photos and side-by-side comparison as examples of image-result requests.

Claude's help documentation says every image includes a source link that lets a reader visit the original page for more details. The link is therefore the route from the image shown in the conversation to the web page identified as its source.

Bing's own image-search guidance uses two URL labels when describing an image's origin:

Source Page URL
Source Image URL

Bing defines the Source Page URL as the webpage using the image, which it calls the original page where the image is found. It describes the Source Image URL as the image location, typically a .jpg. Bing also says that a URL containing www.bing.com or http://tse points to search results rather than the original image location.

Anthropic's Team and Enterprise guidance says anonymized click data is sent to Bing when a user clicks a URL associated with an image. The same page states that data sent to Bing is handled under Microsoft's privacy policy. This describes the click-related data flow documented for Claude image results.

For provenance checks, Bing says to find an image in Bing Image Search, open the specific image, and follow the nearby hyperlink to the website that sources it. That URL is the Source Page URL. Bing then describes opening the actual image, which produces a page containing only the image; the address-bar link, typically a .jpg, is the Source Image URL.

How can you check an image's original page?

Open the source link attached to the image in Claude and record the destination page. If you need the image file as well as the page, compare the destination with Bing's two-part model: the page URL identifies the webpage using the image, while the image URL identifies the file. Bing's removal guidance says both matching URLs are needed for its image-content process, and that www.bing.com or http://tse URLs do not identify the original image location.

FAQ

Anthropic's visual-content guidance uses the name Bing Image Search. Claude's web search help describes the same provider as Bing.

Does Claude show the original web page for every image?

Claude's help page says each image includes a source link so the reader can visit the original page for more details. Bing separately distinguishes that page URL from the URL of the image file.

Is a Bing search URL the original image URL?

Bing's guidance says URLs containing www.bing.com or http://tse refer to search results. Its Source Image URL is the link to the image itself, typically a .jpg.
