Can nosnippet prevent Apple from using a page as AI answer context?

The Citead team, updated

In short. Apple documents nosnippet as a control for page descriptions, web answers, and additional AI context.

Definition: Yes. Apple's About Applebot documentation says that nosnippet prevents Apple from using tagged data as additional context when AI models generate output for Apple products and services. The directive still leaves Applebot's crawling behavior separate.

Key facts

  • Apple's page, published 4 September 2026, says Applebot data may provide context for broad world knowledge questions in Siri and Search. Apple's About Applebot documentation names nosnippet as the opt-out for those answers.
  • Apple says nosnippet stops Applebot from generating a page description or web answer, and suggestions to visit the URL include only the page title.
  • The same documentation says a page can remain crawlable and discoverable through Spotlight, Siri, Safari, and other system-wide features after nosnippet is applied.
  • Apple supports the page directive through an HTML meta tag and through X-Robots-Tag: applebot: nosnippet for non-HTML resources.
  • Apple documents Applebot-Extended as a separate user agent for controlling whether crawled content is used to train Apple's foundation models. It does not crawl webpages.
  • Google's documentation, updated 24 March 2026, describes nosnippet as a Google Search rule that also prevents direct input to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's robots metadata specification documents Google's behavior, while Apple's page documents Apple's behavior.

What does Apple’s nosnippet directive control?

Apple's documentation applies nosnippet to the data that Applebot can use for a description, a web answer, or additional context for AI-generated output. The page can still be crawled, and the URL can remain discoverable. This makes the directive a content-use control for Apple's answer and suggestion surfaces, rather than a crawl block.

The directive is placed in the page's HTML metadata. Apple shows both a generic robots name and an Applebot-specific name:

<meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">
<meta name="applebot" content="nosnippet">

Apple also says that multiple directives can be placed in one meta tag as a comma-separated list or in multiple meta tags. The page's examples include nosnippet, noindex, so combining answer-context exclusion with indexing exclusion is possible when both controls are intended. The About Applebot documentation also gives this header for a PDF or another resource where HTML metadata is unavailable:

X-Robots-Tag: applebot: nosnippet

How is this different from Applebot-Extended?

Apple describes Applebot-Extended as a secondary user agent that gives publishers an additional control over how website content can be used by Apple. A robots.txt rule can target it:

User-agent: Applebot-Extended
Disallow: /private/

Apple says Applebot-Extended does not crawl webpages, and a page that disallows it can still appear in search results. Its documented purpose concerns use of data already crawled by Applebot, including model training. nosnippet addresses a page's description, web answer, and additional context, so the two directives govern different stages of Apple's handling of content.

Apple also documents a page-level paywall signal. A page marked "isAccessibleForFree": false remains eligible for search results, while Applebot does not use that content as additional AI context. Apple says section-level hasPart markup is not supported for this signal.

Does Google’s nosnippet rule apply to Apple?

Google's robots metadata specification describes the rule for Google's crawlers and search features. It says Google's nosnippet applies to web search, Google Images, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and prevents content from being used as direct input for the latter two. It also documents data-nosnippet for excluding text inside span, div, and section elements.

Those Google-specific effects do not replace Apple's own documentation. For Apple answer context, use the Applebot directive shown above. For a selected passage on Google, Google's data-nosnippet attribute is the documented element-level control:

<div data-nosnippet>Text excluded from Google's snippet</div>

FAQ

Does nosnippet stop Applebot from crawling the page?

No. Apple's documentation says the page can remain crawlable and discoverable even when nosnippet is applied.

Does nosnippet opt a page out of model training?

Apple assigns that control to Applebot-Extended. Disallowing that user agent in robots.txt is the documented model-training opt-out.

Can a PDF use the same Apple control?

Yes. Apple documents the X-Robots-Tag: applebot: nosnippet response header for non-HTML resources such as PDFs and images.
