Answer engine

The Citead team, updated

In short. An answer engine finds information and synthesizes a direct response with links to supporting sources.

Definition: An answer engine is an AI search service that finds information and synthesizes a direct response to a question, with links to supporting sources. Perplexity's description of its answer engine identifies real-time web research and cited answers as its core functions.

Key facts

As of 17 October 2026, the providers document these functions and requirements:

  • Perplexity's help center describes conversational answers that combine information from multiple sources and include links to the originals.
  • Anthropic's web search announcement describes Claude processing web results into conversational responses with direct citations.
  • Google's AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches to develop an answer.
  • The same Google documentation requires supporting pages to be indexed and eligible for a search snippet, the short preview accompanying a result.

How does an answer engine construct a response?

Perplexity's explanation of its search service describes searching the web when a question is asked, then synthesizing information from multiple sources into a conversational answer. Retrieval and synthesis are distinct operations: retrieval finds relevant material; synthesis combines that material into a response.

Google calls one retrieval technique query fan-out: multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews can use different models and techniques, producing different responses and links.

An answer engine can also operate within a broader AI assistant. In Claude's web search, Anthropic describes the assistant searching when applicable and incorporating current web information into its response. The answer-engine function therefore concerns how information is retrieved and presented, rather than requiring a separate application.

How can a reader check the answer?

A citation is a link connecting an answer to a source. Perplexity's help center says its responses include citations and links to original sources so readers can verify information and explore the topic further.

Anthropic likewise presents direct citations as a way to fact-check Claude's web-based responses. Opening the linked page allows a reader to compare the answer with the source's actual wording and context. The source page remains part of the checking process even when the engine supplies a complete conversational response.

What changes for a website?

Google's site-owner guidance says existing search engine optimization practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It calls for important content in text and crawl access through hosting infrastructure. It requires no special schema.org markup for these features.

Publishers also control previews. Google's robots meta tag specification gives this HTML rule, placed in the page's head, to suppress snippets for Google:

<meta name="googlebot" content="nosnippet">

The specification says nosnippet also prevents content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google must be allowed to crawl the page to read the rule.

FAQ

Search behavior depends on the service and request. Anthropic's announcement says Claude searches the web when applicable to inform its response.

Can I inspect the sources behind an answer?

Perplexity provides links to original sources. You can open them and compare their content with the answer.

Does my website need special AI markup?

For AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no special structured data is required. Its eligibility requirements include indexing and permission to show a search snippet.
