Key facts

  • Amazon's launch announcement introduces the combined Rufus and Alexa+ experience on 13 May 2026 for U.S. customers.
  • The original Rufus announcement identifies product listings, customer reviews, community questions and answers, and web information as sources for shopping assistance.
  • Amazon Science's technical account describes Rufus retrieving evidence before composing an answer.
  • Amazon Australia's September announcement introduces a beta, meaning an initial release to selected customers, on 10 September 2026.

What changes from Rufus?

Amazon's Rufus announcement, dated 1 February 2024, describes an initial beta in the Amazon mobile app. Its examples cover category research, comparisons, and questions about individual products. A shopper on a product detail page can ask the following question from that announcement:

is this jacket machine washable?

The same announcement says product-specific answers draw on listing details, customer reviews, and community questions and answers.

The Alexa for Shopping announcement describes a connected experience: information shared with Alexa on Echo devices informs shopping on Amazon, while Amazon conversations, browsing, and purchases inform Alexa. Customers can ask what the assistant knows about them and update those details through conversation.

How does it use information from websites?

Amazon Science's October 2024 explanation separates model training from retrieval-augmented generation, a method that selects supporting information before an AI model writes its response. The training material includes Amazon's catalogue, reviews, community answers, and public web information. At answer time, Rufus retrieves evidence from shopping sources and calls Amazon Stores software interfaces.

For a merchant, this identifies product descriptions and customer questions as concrete material used by the shopping assistant. The account also describes responses containing clickable links that help shoppers move around Amazon's store. It does not provide a formula for selecting or citing an independent website.

What shopping tasks does Amazon document?

Amazon's usage guide, updated in September 2026, describes side-by-side comparisons selected from search results and custom shopping guides that compare features, prices, and reviews across Amazon and the web.

The guide distinguishes Scheduled Actions, which can research products and add items to a cart for review and checkout, from purchases triggered by a target price using the customer's default payment method. It also describes uploading a handwritten shopping list to add its contents to a cart.

Shop Direct presents products sold by other stores. Customers can follow a link to the merchant's website; eligible products also offer Buy for Me, through which Amazon purchases from that store using the customer's Amazon payment and shipping details.

FAQ

Do I need Prime or an Echo device?

Amazon's U.S. announcement says you can use Alexa for Shopping free when signed into an Amazon account, without Prime or an Echo device. It places the Alexa icon in the app's bottom navigation bar and at the top of the desktop screen.
